Getting Rid of a Hive

bee hive

We all know that bees are an important part of the pollination chain but that doesn’t mean that we want them setting up homes in our gardens. You need to deal with them in a safe and environmentally-friendly way.

What Kind of Nest is It?

The first step is to identify what types of pests have set up in the nest – a wasp nest can look quite similar to a bee’s nest. If you are unsure, take a photo and send it to your local pest control company – they can advise you how to continue.

If They are Honey Bees

Obviously if these are honey bees, you want to get them moved with as little damage to the nest as possible. You will need proper protective equipment, a smoker, gloves, and a transfer box so that this is accomplished with no danger to you personally. In nine out of ten cases, it is simpler to call in a professional.

Get Some Details Before Deciding on Which Company

1) For starters, what do they actually do with the bees – do they make an attempt to save them?

2) Do they make sure all traces of the old hive are eliminated to prevent other pests from moving in?

3) Do they have the necessary licences and insurance?

If They are Hornets or Wasps

You will first need to decide what your feelings on toxic chemicals around the home are. The only effective non-toxic solution is the complete removal of the nest and as many of the wasps as possible.

Should you want to go the non-toxic route, you have to ask the following:

First and foremost, do they remove the nest?

Secondly will they try to minimise the number of insects that get away?

Should chemicals not be an issue for you, the question becomes where the nest actually is. Can you get to it? If so, you could douse the nest and then leave it until the poison takes effect before getting rid of the hive.

From an environmental point of view, most people will try to avoid using harsh chemicals but it does really depend on what works for you personally. You also need to take your family’s safety into consideration, especially when it comes to hornets or wasps.

The most important consideration is whether or not you can deal with the problem yourself effectively and safely. If not, you will need to bring in a professional.
